Friendship Spotlight: Philip Wilkerson and Maggie Wilkerson Philip Mount Vernon HS and Maggie West Potomac HS both Class of 2003

Maggie and Philip’s love story is one that unfolded slowly, shaped by proximity, community, and a little Richmond Highway rivalry. Both grew up in Fairfax County and attended Fairfax County Public Schools, with Philip at Mount Vernon High School and Maggie at West Potomac High School—longtime rivals separated by little more than a stretch of Richmond Highway. In many ways, theirs was a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story, rooted not in feuding families, but in spirited school pride and overlapping social circles that came with growing up just minutes apart.

They first crossed paths briefly in 10th grade at Sherwood Hall Library, but at the time, they barely knew each other. It wasn’t until the summer after high school graduation in 2003 that their connection truly began. Maggie initially thought Philip was a bit strange, and they didn’t become friends right away. But when a mutual friend asked Maggie what she thought of Philip, word got back to him—and determined to protect his reputation, Philip struck up a conversation. That conversation turned into daily phone calls, and before long, an unexpected friendship blossomed into something much deeper.

As life took them in different directions, their bond only strengthened. Philip began college at Bowie State University on a track scholarship, while Maggie attended James Madison University. Eventually, Philip transferred to JMU, bringing them back together in the same place, at the same time. From there, their relationship continued to grow—through milestones, challenges, and seasons of life—so much so that they can now honestly say they have been together for more than half their lives.

Today, Maggie and Philip share two children and continue to serve the same community that first brought them together. Philip works at George Mason University, and Maggie is a dedicated school social worker with Fairfax County Public Schools. Their story is a testament to how a school system and a shared community—despite friendly rivalries—have a way of connecting people in lasting and meaningful ways. What began as a chance meeting between students from rival Alexandria-area high schools has grown into a lifelong partnership rooted in love, service, and home.
